Shoes for a cause.....

Get out your calendars ladies.....we're partnering again this year with the CMHA for an upcoming fashion event for a great cause that you won't want to miss!

Mental Health Week begins May 1st, and what better way for our local chapter of the Canadian Mental Health Association to kick off the week, than on May 4th, to celebrate 'A Day In Her Shoes'. The event will promote positive women's mental health, promote awareness of mental illness, and to support the destigmatization of mental illness.

This year, the event will be held at the Market Square Atrium, beginning at 6pm. The Atrium will be filled with people and lights, while models display our stunning new Spring styles. The restaurants of Market Square will provide hors d'oeuvres, more than twenty silent auction items will be up for bid and, there will be a raffle draw with fantastic prizes. The grand prize is a round trip for two to Toronto or Ottawa from Porter Airlines! The second place prize is a one-of-a-kind conceptual art chair designed specially for this event, by Interiors by Renee!

Valerie Pringle will give the keynote address this year (former host of CTV's Canada AM) . She was recently recognized by The Banff Television Foundation as one of the "Fifty Famous Faces of Fifty Years of Canadian Television." Her daughter, Catherine, suffers from panic and anxiety attacks, and the mother-daughter team are on a mission to vocalize about the illness as much as possible to try to break down the stigma attached to it, and other mental illnesses.

Valerie and her daughter are well informed on the subject, and from experience Catherine brings a new perspective to the issue. She said when she sought treatment for her panic attacks, she told her co-workers about it. Most people don't; they suffer in silence. According to Valerie, despite it's prevalence, mental illness "has a silence about it," that runs deep. As she points out, you rarely read an obituary that states mental illness as the cause of death, simply because no one wants to talk about it. Catherine's advice to everyone out there who is suffering in silence with a mental illness is, "to be honest, and to speak about it, and to know that you're not alone, and it's very common, and that you will be fine, but you need to talk to somebody. And there's no shame in it."

It is our hope that, with your support, the Canadian Mental Health Association Saint John Branch, can continue to provide education programs and community presentations to provide the greater Saint John area with much needed assistance regarding mental illness, and achieving balance in life. Whether it's balancing work and home life, or managing stress, or depression and anxiety disorders, to grieving and feeling angry - they are available to help.

Come join us bring about change for women who are suffering in our community! For more information on 'A Day in Her Shoes' please stop into the store! We're also selling tickets for the event - they are $40 each.

Look forward to seeing you on May 4th!
