If you're not investing in a new pair of winter boots this season, or if you've recently purchased a new pair (or plan to buy), it's important to keep on a regular "maintenance" schedule of the leather to ensure your boots stay beautiful for as long as possible. In the Saint John area, we unfortunately have to deal with road salt as the main method for keeping our sidewalks, highways and streets clear. This is bad news for our fine leather footwear as salt can be extremely corrosive if left to dry and set into leather (IE - ever notice those white rings on the toes and heel of your boots, that's salt residue!)
Here's some tips on keeping your winter boots clean and protected. All products shown we carry at the store and are an inexpensive way to add seasons to your winter footwear. And of course, any of these products are perfect stocking stuffing size too! :)
This product comes in an aerosol can. It is a universal protector, which means it can be used on polished leathers, suedes, nubucks, fabrics and man-made / faux leather. This product is sprayed onto the entire boot and sets in to create an invisible barrier that helps protect and repel against the elements (snow, rain, salt etc). This product isn't a perfect "waterproofer" but certainly assists with keeping moisture from soaking into the leather.
This product comes in a small container that you apply with a soft cloth. It is a beeswax based thick cream that you massage into polished leathers to create a waterproof barrier from snow, rain and salt. Sno Seal also assists in keeping your leather boots soft and moisturized to prevent the leather from cracking and drying. Think of Sno Seal as a more "heavy duty" version of All-Protector. If you spend a lot of time outdoors in wet and snowy conditions, we recommend this treatment.
Tana Cleaning Lotion
If you find yourself needing to clean a pair of winter boots with white salt stains on them, we recommend Tana's Leather Cleaning Lotion. This lotion is applied to polished leather with a soft cloth and gently lifts out salt residue and other dirt from the leather. This product also helps to re-moisturize the leather to prevent the leather from cracking and drying. We suggest an all-over spray of All Protector after cleaning to prevent future salt and dirt from setting in.
Tana Alu Therm Insulating Insoles
The last product we wanted to share with you was our insulating insoles. If you're the type who ALWAYS seems to have cold toes and feet, we highly recommend picking up a pair. These insoles provide extra warmth with wool-like fleece upper padding and a thin aluminium shield on the under side to repel cold away from your foot. You can use these insoles in shoes, boots, rain wellies and even skates. We offer a full size range to ensure a perfect fit in your boots.
So, whether you need to clean last year's boots or, protect and add extra warmth to your new boots - we've got all the products you need to do so!
Here's to warm and dry feet this entire winter season! Bring on the snow!
